How Our Midlothian Pediatric Dentist Fosters Healthy, Patient-First Oral Development

Beginning with the youngest patients, our Midlothian pediatric dentist, Dr. Wolberg, and the whole Cedarwood Dentistry team seeks to foster a healthy, patient-first approach to oral development. We engage each child and caregiver directly to ensure the child and caregiver feel comfortable. Mirrors help kids better understand what’s happening, empowering our young patients to feel in control. We even introduce friendly characters like a monkey and a unicorn with teeth for practice brushing, making dental education fun and engaging.

As children grow, we adapt our communication style to match each child’s developmental stage, and continue engaging parents in important conversations regarding their child’s oral health. This approach helps us answer any questions from the child patient or their caregiver and makes them active participants in their dental care. By the time a child reaches adolescence, we can have more mature conversations with our patients about things like cosmetic dental treatments for teens and how their mouth may continue to develop into adulthood.

Partnering with Families for Comprehensive, Lasting Care

Our partnership with families begins even before a child’s first visit. We guide parents on home dental care and the best time to introduce their child to dental visits. For the younger years, we emphasize making dental care fun, suggesting the use of electric toothbrushes, letting children choose their own toothbrush, and demonstrating proper brushing techniques. We advise against using toothpaste with fluoride until the child can spit it out and recommend only applying a smear of toothpaste when they’re ready.

At Cedarwood, we always check in with parents during visits to ensure we have a complete picture of a child’s dental history.

Dr. Wolberg notes, “If kids have high fever when teeth are coming in, they could be at a higher risk for cavities. So we like to ask parents this at their early visits to ensure we can keep a close eye on any teeth that might be more prone to cavities.”

When we notice that teeth begin to crowd, we introduce flossing at routine visits and suggest parents purchase fun floss picks for their child’s home care.

Dental Care that Ages with Your Child

Dental care evolves with your child, beginning with assessments of mouth and tooth growth, introducing fluoride and polishing as they reach elementary age, and starting X-rays as baby teeth give way to adult teeth. We apply sealants to prevent cavities, and discussions about orthodontics begin as needed.

The cornerstone of Cedarwood Dentistry’s approach is building long-term relationships with our patients. When children come in for regular preventative care, we get to know them and can help create positive dental experiences that last for years to come.
