Children’s Dentistry: Our Approach at Cedarwood Dentistry

Children’s Dentistry: Our Approach at Cedarwood Dentistry

Children’s dentistry can be a daunting topic, but with the right approach, it can be made easier for both parents and children. Parents and caregivers need to ensure that dental treatment for children not only has immediate benefits but also sets the stage for a lifetime of strong oral health habits.

By learning about preventive pediatric dental care strategies and working closely with your child’s dentist, you will help ensure that your child loves visiting the dentist and is well-equipped for healthy smiles in the future! In this blog post, we’ll discuss how Cedarwood Dentistry approaches pediatric dentistry and how to ensure your children have positive experiences at the dentist for years to come.

Children’s Dentistry at Cedarwood

Dr. Christopher Wolberg explains that pediatric dentistry at Cedarwood Dentistry essentially comes down to two parts: making sure children get the care they need and ensuring it’s a positive experience. At Cedarwood, children’s dentistry doesn’t necessarily differ from traditional family dentistry in many ways. Still, the methods we use to ensure a positive experience are slightly different for our younger patients.

Children’s Dentistry and Comfortability

First, with every patient, we bring them in and make sure they’re comfortable. From there, we explain what we will do, how we will use the tools, and what they might feel. This portion is where some of the differences begin. Dr. Wolberg explains that his team may use different terminology based on a patient’s age. He says, “For instance, we might use ‘Mr. Whistle’ as opposed to a ‘high impact drill’ when we’re explaining a procedure to a child. We’ll also use stuffed animals with models of teeth to explain how to brush and floss – and the kids love brushing a stuffed unicorn’s teeth much more than they would the typical model of teeth we would use for an adult.”

Behavior and Anxiety Concerns in Children’s Dentistry

Of course, parents can come into the room and sit with their child during an appointment. We explain everything we’re doing to the parent, as well as the child. However, occasionally, a child may have behavioral issues or extreme anxiety about coming to the dentist. While it rarely happens, we also have an option to use nitrous – also known as laughing gas –  to make the overall experience more positive for our patients. In addition, if there is ever a situation where the behavioral issues or discomfort are too extreme, we also have wonderful referrals to pediatric dentists in the local area.
